Over the past 10 years, working with extractive and land-development companies, SCDI has developed a successful approach to deliver sustainable social and economic benefits to host communities by advocating the integration of community engagement in the core business activity of the company from the early stages of project development, through construction, operation and closure. The principal methodology developed by SCDI to make this approach successful is to seek solutions that match the needs of the host communities for jobs and income-generating activities with the requirements of the developing industry for labor, materials, contractors and suppliers. In this way, SCDI assists mining companies in the course of their normal development effort to fulfill their “social development responsibilities” and earn a “social license to operate” while helping communities gain benefits from the development and pursue their path to a sustainable future.
